Turkey VAT Registration for Foreign-Owned Companies

In Turkey, the company’s tax position starts with the registered business and its actual activity. Foreign ownership does not create a separate VAT system. The operational task is to align the tax-office registration, invoicing set-up and accounting records before taxable sales begin.

When should a new company address VAT?

Address VAT during the start-of-business and tax-registration workstream, before the company starts issuing taxable invoices. A company number, tax profile and VAT treatment are related, yet they are not interchangeable.

Map the planned supplies, customer location, contract flow and first invoice date with the accountant. That avoids a common error: treating a company-registration completion as proof that every indirect-tax step is complete.

What does foreign ownership change?

Foreign shareholders do not remove Turkish bookkeeping, invoicing or tax-return obligations. The company’s activity, place of supply and documentation determine the operational VAT analysis.

Keep shareholder, director, bank and commercial documents consistent with the tax file. If the business will import, export or provide cross-border services, identify the customs and VAT evidence needed before the first transaction.

What should founders prepare?

Prepare the incorporation record, address evidence, authorised-signatory information, activity description, accounting access and a first-invoice plan. The exact filing sequence depends on the company’s facts.

Ask for a written launch checklist covering e-invoicing where applicable, invoice numbering, periodic returns and document retention. Do not assume a generic “VAT number” answers every Turkish tax question.
