A sheet-metal RFQ works only when every supplier is pricing the same revision, material, finish and acceptance rule. For foreign buyers, the first risk is rarely the laser cut alone; it is the gap between the drawing, the quotation, the approved sample, the inspection plan and the packing list.
What should be in a sheet-metal RFQ?
- Controlled PDF drawing, part number, revision and units.
- 3D file where useful, while keeping the drawing as the contractual reference.
- Material grade, sheet thickness, permitted substitute policy and certificate requirement.
- Critical dimensions, bend angles, datum scheme, flatness or cosmetic criteria and measurement method.
- Finish: deburr level, weld standard, coating type, colour standard, masking and corrosion requirement.
- Quantity by lot, prototype versus production volume, requested date, Incoterm and destination.
- Packaging, labelling, palletisation and loading restrictions.
Which questions make quotations comparable?
Ask each supplier to identify work completed in-house and any outsourced laser cutting, bending, welding, plating, powder coating or assembly. Request lead-time assumptions, tooling ownership, sample cost, inspection frequency, exclusions and change-control procedure. A low quote that silently uses a different steel grade, coating system or packing standard is not comparable.
How should tolerances and bends be controlled?
Put tight tolerances only on functional features. State the reference datum and how critical dimensions will be measured. For bends, specify the formed condition, allowable angle range, inside radius where it matters, and whether a bend allowance model is controlled. Ask for a first-article measurement record before production release. A STEP model helps explain geometry; the revision-controlled drawing should settle disputes.
What should sample approval include?
Approve a production-intent sample against a written checklist: material evidence, key dimensions, surface quality, assembly fit, coating, labels and packaging. Record permitted deviations in writing. Do not let an informal photo approval replace the signed specification and inspection record.
Where should quality gates sit?
Set a gate at material receipt when traceability matters, at the process creating the highest risk, at first article and before packing. Türkiye’s Turkish Standards Institution describes special surveillance work that can include conformity checks to customer requirements and pre-loading or post-loading oversight. That supports a structured inspection plan; it does not certify every factory automatically.
How does Turkey fit a foreign-buyer programme?
Invest in Türkiye reports a broad machinery ecosystem, including 502,000 employees and exports to more than 200 destinations. Use that as a reason to build a disciplined shortlist, not as proof of a particular supplier’s capability. Its logistics guidance says Türkiye is within a four-hour flight radius of 67 countries; this can help factory visits and correction loops, but it is not a quality claim.
