Spain vs Portugal Digital Nomad Visa: Income, Tax and Family Comparison

Spain and Portugal both offer a route for people whose work sits outside the country. The decision is practical: income proof, the family file, and the tax position after arrival. Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs telework-visa guidance, its family and self-employed guidance, and AIMA’s Portuguese remote-work residence guidance set the starting point. Do not use a visa label as a tax answer.

How do the income tests differ?

Spain’s published consular guidance uses a formula tied to the monthly interprofessional minimum wage: 200% for the main teleworker, 75% for the first accompanying family member and 25% for each further family member. The euro amount changes when the wage reference changes, so use the current consular checklist when filing.

Portugal’s remote-work route also requires evidence of means and remote professional activity. Its exact documentary practice can differ by post and applicant profile. Treat a headline monthly figure as a screening tool, then obtain the checklist for the post that will receive the application.

Which route is easier for a family?

Spain’s official guidance expressly lists a spouse or recognised partner, dependent children and certain dependent ascendants. It also gives the family-income formula. That makes the evidence trail visible early: relationship documents, dependence evidence where relevant, insurance and funds.

Portugal’s AIMA guidance states that the temporary remote-work residence permit is issued for two years and can be renewed for successive three-year periods. Family planning still needs its own document review. Marriage certificates, children’s records and foreign documents often need translation or legalisation before the appointment.

What is the real tax comparison?

A residence visa does not decide tax residence. Days present, a habitual home, the employment or client arrangement, social-security coverage and treaty facts matter. Spain and Portugal each have separate domestic tax rules and special-regime eligibility tests; neither should be assumed from the word “nomad.”

Map the first twelve months before filing. Identify where work is performed, who pays, whether a foreign employer has registration duties, and whether the founder is also managing a company. A clean visa file can still leave payroll, permanent-establishment or reporting work after arrival.

Who should choose each country?

Choose Spain when the published percentage-based income formula and its documented family additions fit your evidence, and when the remote-work arrangement meets Spain’s international-telework conditions. Choose Portugal when the remote-work residence structure, renewal horizon and Portuguese operating plan fit better. The better route is the one your documents can support.

  • Spain: a clear published income formula and a defined allowance for limited Spanish client work by eligible self-employed applicants.
  • Portugal: a two-year temporary residence title with successive three-year renewals stated by AIMA.
  • Both: tax, social security and family evidence need a separate pre-filing review.

Frequently asked questions

Can a freelancer use the Spanish route?

Spain’s official consular guidance allows self-employed applicants, with work for Spanish companies limited to 20% of total professional activity.

Does the Spanish income amount stay fixed?

No. The formula is tied to the current minimum-wage reference, so the cash amount must be confirmed for the filing year.

Does a Portuguese remote-work permit solve tax residency?

No. Immigration permission and tax residence are separate analyses.

Can family members be added later?

Do not assume a later addition is automatic. Confirm the family route, document requirements and timing with the competent authority before filing.
