A carta de invitacion is a document showing that someone residing in Spain officially invites you. It is obtained from the local police station and can be presented as accommodation proof. This document is not required if you have a hotel reservation.
Gibraltar is British territory and is outside the Schengen area. However, if you have a multi-entry Schengen visa, you can enter Gibraltar. Be careful with a single-entry visa, as you may not be able to re-enter Spain.
The Spanish consulate may ask brief questions during document submission but does not schedule a separate interview appointment. Being informed about your travel purpose and plans is sufficient.
