Estonia: Digital Nomad Visa vs e-Residency 2026

Estonia's Digital Nomad Visa and e-Residency solve different problems. The visa is a temporary right to stay in Estonia while working remotely. e-Residency is a government-issued digital identity that lets a non-resident use selected Estonian e-services and run an Estonian company online.

What is the practical difference?

Choose the Digital Nomad Visa when your immediate need is to live in Estonia and work online. Choose e-Residency when you need a digital business tool, not immigration status. One can be useful without the other.

Who fits Estonia's Digital Nomad Visa?

The official e-Residency programme describes the route for location-independent workers employed by a company registered abroad, owners of a company registered abroad, or freelancers whose clients are mainly outside Estonia. Its current page states a stay of up to one year, processing of up to 30 days, and a minimum net monthly income threshold of €4,500. Check the official Digital Nomad Visa page before filing because the authority decides each application.

What does e-Residency actually give you?

e-Residency provides secure online authentication and access to digital business administration. It can support forming and managing an Estonian company remotely. It does not grant entry, a visa, a residence permit, citizenship, or personal tax residence.

Can you hold both?

Yes. A founder can use e-Residency for an Estonian company's digital administration and separately apply for the visa when temporary physical presence in Estonia is needed. The two files have different tests. Do not assume that an Estonian company alone proves visa eligibility.

How long can a D visa cover?

The Police and Border Guard Board says a long-term D visa can have validity of up to 12 months and allow up to 365 days of stay within 12 consecutive months. The Digital Nomad Visa sits within this mobility framework. Read the PBGB long-term visa guidance alongside the nomad route rules.

What should founders check before choosing?

Map where you will physically work, who pays you, where your company is managed, and whether you need a stay right or merely a company administration tool. For filing support, see Corpenza's residence permit services and the current Estonia relocation update.

Frequently asked questions

Does e-Residency let me live in Estonia?

No. It is a digital identity programme, not an immigration permission.

Can a Digital Nomad Visa make me an Estonian tax resident?

Immigration status and tax residence are separate assessments. Obtain country-specific tax advice before relying on a stay plan.

Can I work for an Estonian employer under this route?

The official nomad description focuses on foreign employers, foreign companies, and freelancers with mainly foreign clients. Check the exact work pattern before applying.

Is this legal or tax advice?

No. This is general information. Immigration and tax rules change and depend on your facts.
